Meet Volunteer Beth & Rescue Millie...
Millie was rescued from slaughter.
Because she lived in the mud, she was also covered with sores. One day, when she was a little over a year old, her owner took her to the sale barn. She was put in a pen with lots of other horses. All of the horses were scared. They didn’t know what was going to happen to them, but it didn’t feel good. A pretty lady with long blond hair and a big strong man with a confident and gentle air about him came and saw Skinny Millie in the pen. They said: “We think Millie would make a great horse. All she needs is some love and some good food.” So the lady and the man bought Millie and brought her home to their rescue farm. Some friends of the man and woman came over for a visit. They said: “We have some extra space at our home. Skinny Millie can come live with us until she is healthy and ready to go to her lifelong home.” So Skinny Millie came to live with Sue and Steve. At first she got to live with a baby horse named Speedo. Skinny Millie and Speedo got along fine and became good friends. They shared a pasture together during the day. At night they shared a run-in so they didn’t have to sleep in the rain and mud. Skinny Millie had lots of sores from living in the mud at her first home. They hurt and itched something awful. Everyday Sue or Steve or their daughter, Jenny, or their other daughter, Beth, would brush Millie and keep her clean. They would also give her baths with some shampoo that smelled awful. Eventually, Millie’s coat began to heal. Sue did a happy dance the day the last of the sores healed up. Skinny Millie’s coat was starting to grow glossy. And Skinny Millie was starting to become Pretty Millie. Everyday Sue and Steve would make sure Millie had lots of good food and clean water. Millie was starting to fill out. She no longer looked like a bag of bones. One day, the strong man and the pretty woman came to Sue and Steve’s house. They were there to pick up Speedo. Speedo was going to move from Iowa to her new lifelong home in Rhode Island. Speedo and Millie whinnied their goodbyes to each other. That night, Millie got to move into a stall inside the barn with Sue and Steve’s other horses. She missed her friend Speedo, but she had a new friend named Bravo in the stall next to her. For the first time in her life, Millie had her very own stall. It was warm and dry. It had something new on the floor she had never seen before: sawdust on top of rubber mats. Millie had never slept in such a nice bed. Each night, after Millie finished her supper, she would lay down and stretch out in her stall and fall sound asleep. Each morning she would wake up happy and cheerful and feeling stronger and stronger. Everyday her coat filled in more and more. Each day her coat got glossier and glossier. She was no longer Skinny Millie, she was now Beautiful Millie.
How does Millie’s story end? We’re not sure yet. Millie is ready to begin her training. She will be two in the spring. She needs a lifelong home. Sue and Steve love her. They will keep her safe, healthy and well fed. But Sue and Steve don’t have time to ride her. They don’t have time to finish her training. They would like to see her go to live with someone who will love her and give her a job. Can you help write the happy ending to Millie’s story? If you would like to adopt Millie please inquire by clicking here: info@blueridgerescue.org. HAPPY ENDING FOR MILLIE - SHE WAS ADOPTED! SEE MILLIE AND HER NEW MOM BELOW!!! If the equine already has appointments set then the hold can not be placed until the appointments are done. If you want Vet work done the payment is due ahead of time. All adoption fees are due within the 3 days of the hold. If there is a hold on an equine we will still put names on a waiting list incase the adoption falls through. All adopted equines must be picked-up or delivered within 3 days or there is a daily board charge. WE CAN NOT ADOPT EQUINES OUT FOR FREE. *Please Note: *When we say "Kid Safe" we leave this up to the parent to determine their child's riding/horse experience level. We let our child ride/work with them under supervision. Every child and rider is different. Our child safe rescues are safe enough for 4-H kids and most can be adopted for younger children - please do what is safe for your child. If we put kid safe that means that we feel confident with children catching, leading, bathing, and/or being all around. We always recommend adult supervision for children under 18 years of age. Some individuals feel that younger horses are not safe for children however we feel that any equine can be just as dangerous to children and all people not matter what age or size. Being around all equines is an inherent risk. |
