Welcome to Blue Ridge Rescue!
Meet our rescues up close... and... Have fun!

OUR MISSION: To rescue, rehabilitate, and train homeless, neglected & abandoned equines; that will in time be adopted out to a loving family and lifelong home where they will be able to live out their life in a loving, caring and healthy environment. As a part of our organization, we are here to educate and train the new and future owners with their newly adopted equine together as a team. Lastly we will do our part to help educate the public about the inhumane treatment of equines sold for meat at many auction sale barns, the inhumane transporting of "kill" horses & other equines, and the inhumane & unregulated slaughtering of them.

Please Be Aware:
Please when choosing to adopt from a rescue be sure it is an honest rescue organization that does it for non-profit and NOT for monetary gain.
A true rescue does it to better the animals lives and to make a difference in the world - NOT to fill their pocket book.

Since we have started our rescue we have successfully placed many equines to great homes BUT we also started to see a growing number of "not so worthy" businesses, facilities and/or individuals that wanted to capitalize off of our hard work and dedication.

We do it to truly change the lives of horses and the horse industry... but some businesses, facilities and/or individuals see that our rescue is doing well placing equines... and that is all they see.
They want to capitalize off of our success in placing equines by posing as a rescue or advertising their "equines for sale" as rescues but really doing it for monetary gain.

We have seen Boarding Facilities, Traders, Animal Hoarders and even SALE BARNS posting on the internet horses as "rescues".

Please Be Aware and support the non-profit rescue organizations that do it because they want to make a difference in horses lives and the horse industry.

Choose a rescue organization where the funds will be used to save and rehabilitate more unwanted equines or equines in need because you will not only help the equine you adopt or donate to;
You will help future rescued equines to come...

Our Site:
This site is to educate, provide awareness, and to help homeless equines find lifelong homes. Opinions, feelings, and beliefs about slaughter is up to each individual;
BUT lets not turn our head to the equines that need us and did not ask to be there
.

Blue Ridge is not here to say whether slaughter is right or wrong - we are here to educate and save lives...
We will say that you can avoid a brutal ending for your equine by not using the auction system and by using humane euthanasia when needed.

Blue Ridge is here to help save adoptable equines from slaughter that can live out their life in a loving and lifelong home.

Blue Ridge does not agree with all government intervention;
We want to see the change made within the horse industry and practices as oppose to having politicians that know little about the horse industry making decisions for it.

Because of the ban on slaughter in America American horses are being sent across the border to face a brutal and inhumane death and their meat sold to foreign markets.

Many slaughter-bound horses are there due to ignorance, the trading pipeline, and auction.

Blue Ridge wants to educate equine owners about what happens to equines that are sold at auction.
The majority of all horses and other equines that are sold at auction will either be bought by a meat buyer or bought by a trader and will eventually some day end up in a kill pen - no matter what breed, age or size.

Please be responsible for your equines and lets start...

****************

STARTING SEPTEMBER 1, 2010 - ALL ADOPTED EQUINES MUST BE PICKED UP WITHIN 1 WEEK.
Please only inquire if you are SERIOUS and READY to adopt.

*PLEASE NOTE: We ask that each individual take into consideration adoption fees being the main source of funding for this rescue. Please do not compare the adoption fees to the horse market because this is what makes it possible to continue to save and rehabilitate these wonderful rescues. If an equine is more than the usual amount it is to help raise funding for those rescues that exceed their adoption fee in Vet bills and care. Be generous and understand that your money will help many more rescues to come - without it the rescue can not survive which means many neglected, unwanted, abandoned, and slaughter-bound equines will not survive due to the rescue not being able to sustain & not being able to rescue them.

BLUE RIDGE RESCUE'S AVERAGE MONTHLY FEED BILL: $650 - $1500 DEPENDING ON # OF RESCUES.

Our main goal is to train our rescued horses so that they have a chance at life. Our second important goal is to fit the right horse with the right owner; that way they will stay a matched pair for a lifetime. Our third goal is to have fun doing it!!!

We have witnessed some really sad stories but we our so thankful for the equines that we have and will continue to save that we hope to have continued support doing what we love and saving lives one horse at a time!

WE BELIEVE: A GRADE HORSE IS AS TRAINABLE AS A PAPERED HORSE...
If you are looking for a good horse check out your local rescue organizations first!!!
Adopt... Rather than Breed.
Help Save A Life By Adopting, Donating... Or Both.

We believe that a horse that is grade can live just as long, be just as healthy and be just as trainable as a horse that is bred for specific registration papers or bred for specific characteristics. We believe that a "Perfect" horse is one that is healthy, trained, and safe... Not because of expensive papers and pretty color.

We also believe that all horses can be trained and trained well... ALL BREEDS HAVE THEIR OWN PURPOSE! Each and every breed has been bred for a purpose and no breed is better than another... however many horse owners have a preference. It all depends on what the horse will be used for and how it is trained.

We believe "THERE IS NO BAD HORSE" and it is 90% of the time either THE HANDLER'S/RIDER'S FAULT... Too many horses are blamed for something that is 90% of the time The Handler's/Rider's ERROR.

DONATE TO RESCUE ORGANIZATIONS TO HELP PREVENT ANOTHER HORSE FROM BEING SLAUGHTERED.

We want to thank those that have been regularly visiting the Auction Sale Barn in Central Eastern Iowa (off Interstate I80 near Iowa City) observing the treatment at these sales. Thank you for reporting all inhumane treatment of animals to Iowa State Legislators, the Humane Society and Washington D.C.
Because of your efforts and spreading the word about this sale barn that sells animals for meat to kill buyers and similar sale barns around the nation - the owners of these sale barns are scared and hopefully they will start and continue to provide better treatment, ensuring their workers are providing humane care while animals are in their sale barn.
Those of you that are regularly visiting to observe the treatment - please keep your identity undercover, write down all inhumane treatment, document time & date, take pictures if able, document detailed descriptions, write down the workers/individuals involed, then have a witness sign it with their phone number.
Send this information to your State Legislators, State Ag Deportment and State DVM. Together we have started to make a change, these owners are SCARED and they know they are being watched.
This is how we keep them honest - by letting them know what they do inhumane will be made public. Thanks again and keep helping the animals that can't help themselves.

For those that continue to take your animals to sale barns knowing they are sold for meat - knowing their destiny - we can only hope that by reading our website you will educate yourself and make a better choice for your animal(s). Together we can make a difference, we have and will continue.
Regardless of if BRR can go to the sales - the word has been spread around the nation, we have reached people from all over the world, they know what is going on, and it is up to the community to keep these sale barn owners, their workers, and kill buyers in check.

INSTEAD - SHOP AT OUR "SALE BARN" AND HELP SAVE A LIFE!!! SEE BELOW:

***PLEASE NOTE:
If you take your horses & other animals to auction they will be sold with a VERY HIGH chance of being bought for meat. DO NOT risk taking your animals there, try to find them homes; there are many free resources on the internet to help you place your animals.
Why put $$$ in the hands of a Sale Barn Owner or Kill Buyers???
Do the right thing - find them homes privately.
DON'T USE THE AUCTION SALE BARNS.
Especially the ones known for selling to kill buyers, the kill buyers sit in the audience, they buy in all rings regardless of how or where the animal is sold in the building, and they don't care who the animal belongs to - its all about $$$ to them, these buyers have NO compassion for animals or people.

CREATING A LEGACY OF LOVE AND COMPASSION FOR EQUINES.

Including BLUE RIDGE HORSE RESCUE in your estate planning allows you to make a profound and lasting impact on the future of BLUE RIDGE HORSE RESCUE and our equine life-saving program & efforts. It also insures that your generous spirit will continue to help us rescue, rehabilitate and re-home countless numbers of unwanted and neglected equines in need.

When naming BLUE RIDGE HORSE RESCUE in your will, you may leave a specific dollar amount, a set percentage of your estate, or a particular property. You may also name BLUE RIDGE HORSE RESCUE as the beneficiary of your retirement plan, life insurance policy, bank account, mutual fund, charitable remainder trust, or charitable lead trust. Each of these options may help you reduce your estate taxes.

Donating appreciated stocks or bonds to BLUE RIDGE HORSE RESCUE is sometimes more advantageous than gifts of cash. Here are a few reasons why:

1. You avoid paying capital gains taxes when you contribute appreciated stocks or bonds directly to BLUE RIDGE HORSE RESCUE.

2. You deduct the full value of the stock or bond as a charitable contribution, saving income taxes and lowering the effective cost of your gift.

3. The full value of your gift of stocks or bonds helps BLUE RIDGE HORSE RESCUE and its equine life-saving program & efforts.

Please let us know if you have included BLUE RIDGE HORSE RESCUE in your estate planning so we may thank you and celebrate your generosity.

All friends of BLUE RIDGE HORSE RESCUE are encouraged to consult their financial or legal advisors when considering estate planning options.

Running an animal shelter is an expensive endeavor, and running an Equine Rescue can be even a greater one. While the equines at BLUE RIDGE HORSE RESCUE are in our care, they get all of their needs provided with the best Veterinarian care, sound nutrition, and a safe & clean environment... all of which require supplies. Please take a moment to review our Wish List on our rescue web site at: http://www.blueridgerescue.org/WishListFinal.html.

Anything you can provide BLUE RIDGE HORSE RESCUE will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for reading and we hope together we can continue to "Save Lives... One Horse At A Time."

Please feel free to pass along to friends, family and all Horse Lovers.
